Hien from nojin, Nuremberg, Germany

Ngoc-Hien Nguyen, short Hien, was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany where she graduated as a Design-Engineer at the University of Applied Sciences. After more than a decade working in the design industry, Hien longed for a creative outlet to express herself. That’s why, in 2020, she founded nojin.

Rather than feeding into the revolving door of fast fashion and trends, nojin comprises a season-less permanent collection, designed to transcend gender norms and represents a meeting point between cultures. The minimalist brand consciously considers every step of the production process, prioritizing sustainability, transparency and longevity.

Hien’s parents immigrated from Vietnam to Germany in the early 80’s and used to run a small production line of clothes and accessories out of the corner of their bedroom. As a child, Hien spent hours watching them sew, surrounded by piles of fabrics. Her parents’ hard work and their skill for hand craftsmanship have planted seeds for Hien to become an apparel designer.

For our launch exhibition 'Tangible Beauties' which took place during Berlin Art Week 2021, Hien designed the SCRAPMONO Kimono jacket, an exclusive, one-of-a-kind piece made of approximately 250 leftover fabric scraps of 100% organic cotton canvas.
