Sasson Rafailov engages with a variety of materials and traditional techniques to enrich his projects and close the cycle of waste.
This one of a kind vase is hand built using clay which has been combined with marble dust from Sasson's sculpture practice. After mixing the clay, the artist shapes it as a solid mass in the intended size and general shape of the vase. Sasson carves the exterior of this mass, using different cutting tools and at times tearing the clay with his hands to leave a variety of surfaces behind for the glaze to flow over.
After several weeks of carefully drying this sculpted exterior, Sasson carves away the interior cavity and finishes the base with a maker's stamp. When fired, the clay shrinks away from the larger particles of marble, leaving little white specs along the dark ceramic surface. The nuka glaze is adapted from a traditional Japanese recipe, and uses wood ash in combination with feldspar to achieve a naturally off-white surface.
