RBS Bubble Vessel #63 by Steven Haulenbeek
Image © hvíla editions
Haulenbeek utilizes multiple variations of this experimental process to create sculptural objects, furniture and lighting inspired by coral, cactus, rock formations and other natural forms. The artist's work passes by the ordinary and seeks to invent unique production methods to let the rawness of the objects he works on emerge organically. By interjecting uncontrollable variants within his techniques, Haulenbeek experiments with the balance between control and serendipity.
The colors and shapes of the two vessels presented at ART OF LIVING naturally blended into the landscape of Jubail Island. Reflecting the island's energy and beauty, it almost seemed like they have been created on-site.

"Way Home" by Setbyol Oh | oh-licht
‘WAY HOME’ by Setbyol Oh from oh-licht is a 8 meter long tube made of mulberry paper (Hanji) and wicker, in which LED lights are installed. Hanji is a traditional Korean paper which has been used for hundreds of years in Korea for doors, windows, wallpaper and to make lamps in traditional houses. It is made from the fibers inside the stems of one-year-old mulberry trees.
The historic process of boiling and drying the fiber from the bark of trees gives the paper not only durability but also a beautiful surface that is expressed through its natural properties. Mulberry trees are especially strong and resilient to moisture, as they have to resist high humidity and large temperature differences between summer and winter.
As a final step, very thin sheets of white silk paper are individually pleated and then turned into a leave shape. About 1950 of these wrinkled paper leaves are glued onto the tube's surface.

Created through material innovation and experiments with artisanal techniques, all objects on show at Downtown Design tell the story of its individual making process. While each piece is distinctive in its form and materiality, collectively they reveal deep intuition and convey the emotions of its maker, as part of a timeless poetic narrative.
RBS Bubble vessel by Steven Haulenbeek
The RBS VESSELS by Steven Haulenbeek are created using solid cast blocks of resin-bonded sand (RBS) which is typically a byproduct of the metal casting industry. The material is hand sculpted and selectively soaked with a coating of color resin that penetrates into the outer layer. Once cured, the object is excavated from the uncured sand block leaving the uniquely textured hardened shell.

Hand-carved Bleached Ash bowl by Robert George
British arborist and artist Robert George works trees into one-of-a-kind objects. Working at height for over a decade, studying, climbing and being in contact with wood in its rawest form – day in, day out and come rain or shine – gives the Robert a unique relationship with the work he creates.
He turns the Ash Wood whilst it is very green (freshly sawn) so there is a lot of moisture in it still. As the bowl dries, the wood releases its tensions and forms new shapes. The pith (centre of the tree) is left in the bowl to allow for as much movement as possible.
After countless hours of turning and fine hollowing on the lathe, the surface is then hand carved using traditional gouges. This hand textured surface creates an immersive, haptic experience which allows to reminisce about moments in nature. Certain areas are left smooth to highlight interest in the wood and grain patterns. When the sunrays shine through the wood, it seems to become nearly transparent.

'Way home' light object by oh-licht
Meet Berlin based Korean artist Setbyol Oh and watch how she creates her lamps using fine wicker and mulberry paper! Very thin sheets of silk paper are individually pleated and then turned into a leaf. Hundreds of these single leaves, attached to another, create a whole organic shape. Experience sophisticated craftsmanship and find out about the artist’s interpretation of Korean tradition within European culture
The first edition of the light object "Way home" is a 6 meter long tube made of mulberry paper and wicker, in which LED lights are installed. About 1500 white leaves are glued onto the surface. For Setbyol Oh the light object symbolizes a path that shows where she comes from and where she is going. The path is variable and can be put in any shape or simply be laid down straight.

'Form I,Form II, Form III …' glazed stoneware by Hana Karim Studio
Meet ceramic artist Hana Karim from Ljubljana, Slovenia and watch her demonstrating how she does her clay work, followed by a chat over a glass of wine!
Hana Karim focuses on handmade pieces. Her works have a rustic sense of “imperfection” and are displayed as softly misshapen forms. She uses washes of color glaze, inviting drips and uneven brush strokes to grace each object’s surface. During creating, Hana Karim switches between sudden impulses and rational approaches. She rarely sketches and so she often receives ideas and inspiration randomly. Each of her pieces has its own unique color scheme—some are bright pastels and metallic, others are blue and green.
Especially made for the IVORY exhibition, Hana Karim has chosen a color palette of various shades of beige.

INTINGO glass vase by Veronika Beckh
Glass artist Veronika Beckh was interested in the material from a young age; the transparency and the idea that something so rigid can be permeable and flowing. For her, molten glass is still magical. At the time Beckh decided to turn her passion into a career, glassblowing has still been male dominated. It was considered to be too much of a physical discipline for women. Join us for a cozy little gathering and listen to the artist's story.
Her INTINGO vases are part of the IVORY exhibition. INTINGO comes from Latin and means ’I dip into’. By the additive gathering of the post Beckh is able to blow up the glass partially to create new volumes. In this spontaneous way of working the artist emphasizes the fluid quality of glass. She is working with the difference of heat and thickness of the material. Through these altering layers a graphic structure is appearing, which creates optical illusions and color fades away with each object in a unique way.

Hana stellt handgefertigte Stücke her, jedes ist einzigartig.

It’s the magic that happens when a craftsperson puts hands — and head — to work. German designer Sebastian Herkner has always been fascinated by the techniques, materials and art of making things by hand. His work balances tradition and innovation, crafts and technology.
Sebastian Herkner introducing the exhibition
Sebastian Herkner was thus perfectly poised to introduce hvíla editions' official launch 'Tangible Beauties' which took place during Berlin Art Week in September 2021.
In a speech, he described how objects can appeal to our senses and how processes themselves cultivate beauty. For Herkner, knowing an object’s story — who produced it, how, and with what materials — is of the utmost importance. Knowing the story lets us establish an emotional and physical relationship to an object and its culture.
Visitors in front of the SHOWZ Berlin showroom in Torstraße 207, Berlin Mitte
hvíla editions’ selected objects invite us to pause and reflect on the narrative behind each design. We aim to show objects that are not only functional or decorative; not only products, but also works of art. These objects have souls and they tell stories. They become companions for life — perhaps for generations.
Thank you for the introduction and your support, my dear friend Sebastian!

'Nebule' Lamps series by hettler.tüllmann, Germany
One of hettler.tüllmann’s more recent projects involved working with weaving cooperative Janocraft, in Arba Minch, Ethiopia. Multigenerational textile-making in the region brings community members together, transforming cotton into fabric that can be brought to market. The collaboration sees hettler.tüllmann and Janocraft combining traditional materials and techniques with unconventional ones to form unexpected objects. Whereby colorful recycled, telephone wires are woven with natural cotton to form the Nebule Lamps series—synthesizing contemporary and traditional cultures into a new vision of sustainability.
Kimono jackets by nojin, Germany
nojin consists of a season-less permanent collection of yet functional garments and accessories, designed to transcend gender norms and embrace bodies of all sizes. The brand also strives to keep its environmental footprint to a minimum by honoring growth by inspiration rather than adhering to conventional seasons, limiting production to small batches and putting all scrap material to use. And the quality of the craftsmanship and materials used in production mean these garments only improve the more they are worn.
NOTCH side table by Dan Yeffet Design Studio, France
This NOTCH side table (or stool) by Israeli-born, Paris-based designer Dan Yeffet is the very first piece in his limited edition NOTCH series. Derived from the simplicity of the classic wooden bolt and its characteristic ridges, the design takes a familiar object and dissects and reconstructs it, elevating its tangible attributes—material, form, scale, color—into something luxurious.
Each piece is produced using a traditional molding technique, resulting in a hefty bronze-cast table—a contemporary design piece that while expressing a heightened visual aesthetic, still reminds us of its humble origins.

The material is hand sculpted and selectively soaked with a coating of color resin that penetrates into the outer layer. The RBS Series utilizes multiple variations of the experimental process to create vessels, furniture, lighting and sculpture inspired by coral, cactus, rock formations and other natural forms.
Rocking Horse by Antonio Aricò, Italy
To see the rocking horse (or donkey) by Aricò, we have to be patient a little longer. Craftsmanship takes its time. Antonio works side by side with his grandfather, master carpenter Saverio Zamingain, in the family workshop in Calabria, South Italy. In anticipation to the actual piece of furniture, we show Antonio's drawing. His unique sketches illustrate, how the artist imagines the products with his 'child's eyes'.
The pop-up exhibition 'Tangible Beauties' takes place at SHOWZ brand experience agency in Torstraße 207, 10115 Berlin for only five days, from September 15-19, 2021.
